When the needs of a patient cannot be met with conventional dosage forms, our pharmacists work with the prescribing physician to find a solution.
For instance, if a patient requires a medication in a strength that is not made by the drug’s manufacturer, our pharmacists can obtain the necessary ingredients and specially prepare the medication in that strength. This personalized care ensures that our patients receive the precise treatment they need.
Customization of strength is just one of the many reasons that a prescription may be compounded; sometimes the actual form of the medication cannot meet the needs of a patient. For example, if a patient cannot swallow tablets, our pharmacists have the ability to compound most medications as liquid
suspensions. In fact, most drugs can be compounded into a variety of forms, including lozenges, lollipops, and transdermal gels. Our pharmacists often use this capability to assist veterinarians in creating solutions when commercially available products fall short. Kaye’s has worked with veterinarians to address the unique needs of a wide-range of clients, including feline, canine, and equine patients.
On occasion, other factors may prevent a patient from taking their medicine, even if the form of the medication meets the needs of a patient. One of these factors is taste. Oftentimes children prescribed liquid medications refuse to take them simply because the taste is not agreeable. In these cases, our pharmacists can analyze the properties of the medication and help select an alternative flavor, such as tutti-frutti, vanilla, or grape.
An additional advantage to personalized prescription compounding is the opportunity to create pharmaceutical preparations in more natural forms than are commercially available. For example, many patients are allergic to preservatives and dyes that are found in commercially available products. In the absence of compounding, the patients’ physicians are often unable to utilize therapies that could otherwise be very effective in treating the patients’ conditions. However, our pharmacists have the ability to compound medications using only pure ingredients free from dyes, preservatives, and other inert ingredients.
In addition to benefiting allergy sensitive individuals, this capability benefits women that require or desire natural hormone replacement therapies. Our pharmacists are experienced in working with physicians to create natural hormone replacements, which provide women with the medication they need without synthetic ingredients. In many cases, women and their physicians find this all-natural alternative to be more effective and without the side-effects commercially available products may cause.
If commercially available medications are not meeting your needs, we encourage you to discuss with our pharmacists the personalized compounded solutions that may be available.
